Quaternary Ammonium Compounds

Quaternary Ammonium Compounds (QAC), which have a reputation for their efficacy, can be used as a general biocide and algaecide. These products help to control bacteria, algae and fungi slimes and macro-fouling in water systems.

Lonza Water Treatment offers a wide range of QAC technologies that can be used in many applications, including industrial, commercial, municipal and surface water treatment applications, either as products or as part of formulations.

Bardac 22
Bardac® 22

The Bardac® 22 product shows a broad spectrum of activity against both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria and is also effective on fungi and viruses, including those that are enveloped.  Showing a high tolerance to hard water (above 350ppm), it remains active in the presence of heavy organic soiling. Its impressive surfactant and wetting properties make it one of the multipurpose biocides of choice for cooling systems and swimming pool water treatment as part of formulations.

This Bardac® 22 product displays synergistic effects in combination with aldehydes and complexing agents, such as EDTA, but is incompatible with anionic detergents. It is registered in a large number of countries for numerous applications, including water treatment applications as well as hygiene and material protection applications.

Bardac 2240
Bardac® 2240

The Bardac® 2240 product is active on a broad spectrum of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria and is also effective on fungi and viruses, including those that are enveloped. The Bardac® 2240 product, as part of cooling water treatment product formulations, acts as a surfactant and a biocide, even in the presence of heavy organic soiling. It can also be integrated as part of active ingredients for swimming pool water treatment products. Its notable surfactant and wetting properties make this product one of the multipurpose biocides of choice for cooling systems and swimming pool water treatment as part of formulations.

It shows synergistic effects in combination with aldehydes and complexing agents, such as EDTA, but is incompatible with anionic detergents.

Bardac 2270e
Bardac® 2270

The Bardac® 2270 product is an effective co-formulant for numerous swimming pool and cooling water treatment products. In order to assist with formulation with the product, it contains ethanol as a solvent. It is a broad-spectrum biocide on gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, fungi, algae and viruses. As a Dialkyl Dimethyl Ammonium Chloride (DDAC), the Bardac® 2270 product shows impressive wetting properties and acts as a dispersant in multifunctional formulations because it displays synergistic effects in combination with aldehydes and complexing agents, such as EDTA. However, it is incompatible with anionic detergents.

Bardac 2270e
Bardac® 2270E

The Bardac® 2270E product serves as a biocidal product and can be used in the formulation of numerous swimming pool and cooling water treatment products due to its high amine content.

The Bardac® 2270E product is the same formulation as the Bardac® 2270 product; except the solvent is ethylene glycol, making it usable at low temperatures. It shows broad-spectrum activity against both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, can act as a fungicide and algaecide and is active against viruses, including those that are enveloped.

It is versatile and tolerant to anionic contaminants relating to hard water. Its desirable surfactant and wetting properties make this product a favorable co-formulant for multifunctional products.

Barquat CB50
Barquat® CB50 & CB80

Barquat® CB50 (50% active ingredient) and CB80 (80% active ingredient) products are blends of Alkyl Dimethyl Benzyl Ammoniumchlorides. Showing a broad-activity spectrum, the products are effective as micro-biocides, however are less effective as an algaecide and fungicide. Carbon chains (being centred in particular on C12 and C14) offer an interesting profile as a bactericide due to the adsorption of its cationic radical on the anionic bacterial cell surface, leading to the disorganization of the cytoplasmic membrane.

Barquat DM50
Barquat® DM50 & DM80

The Barquat® DM range is a grade of Alkyl Dimethyl Benzyl Ammonium Chlorides acting as an effective algaecide and biocide, which has 50% (DM50) or 80% (DM80) actives, respectively.
Their well-defined carbon chain distribution makes Barquat® DM50 and DM80 products effective for biological corrosion control and for sulphate-reducing bacteria in water systems.

Barquat MB80
Barquat® MB50 & MB80

When used as an active ingredient in water treatment formulations, these products have been found to provide effective biocidal action against a broad spectrum of microbial organisms such as bacteria, fungi, viruses and algae. This “first” generation quaternary ammonium compound delivers potent germicidal action in cooling water applications. The Barquat® MB50 and MB80 products are blends of Alkyl Dimethyl Benzyl Ammonium Chlorides.

Barquat® MS100
Barquat® MS100

The Barquat® MS100 product consists of a distinct quaternary powder, Alkyl Dimethyl Benzyl Ammonium Chloride, and serves as an active for biocidal products. This product has a favorable hard water tolerance for sanitizing, excellent hard surface disinfection properties and impressive hard water solubility. It can be used as part of a formulation of multifunctional solid products and is compatible with inorganic builders and nonionic surfactants.

This product shows good bacterial, fungicidal and algaecide efficacy, making it a co-formulant for solid- based swimming pool water treatment products.

Product packaging is available in fibre drums or IBC’s.

Barquat PQ2
Barquat® PQ/PQ-2

The Barquat® PQ and PQ-2 products are non-foaming cationic polymeric quaternary ammonium algaecides. These products act as dispersant agents and aid in water clarification as they assist in the coagulation of small particles. The Barquat® PQ product has a 60% concentration in polyquat, whereas the Barquat® PQ-2 product has a 50% concentration.

Barquat® PQ & PQ-2 show a high degree of efficacy against algae when compared to other algaecides. However, for optimal control in cooling water, Lonza recommends a supplementary oxidizer such as our Dantobrom® RW products.

At recommended use concentrations the Barquat® PQ and PQ-2 products are compatible with cationic and non-ionic surfactants.

Carboshield 1000E
Carboshield® 1000E

The Carboshield® 1000E product is comprised of a blend of didecyl dimethyl ammonium carbonate and didecyl dimethyl ammonium bicarbonate. Unlike traditional chloride quaternaries, this non-chloride quaternary provides excellent corrosion inhibition properties on steel, aluminum, iron, brass and copper.  

It can be used as a cationic surfactant, a thin film forming corrosion inhibitor or a wetting/dispersion agent. It is hard-water tolerant and requires little or no additional sequestering agents for effective performance. The Carboshield® 1000E product is compatible with numerous nonionic surfactants as well as many dyes and fragrances.
